Bioenergy

Bioenergy has received a great deal of attention from the public and policy makers recently – on the one hand for the opportunities it offers as a renewable energy source. For the transport sector, biofuels are currently the only source of renewable energy that can be easily integrated into the existing fuels infrastructure. In the longer term, biofuels are expected to play an important role in the transport sector, as there are few alternatives for aviation, shipping and long-distance trucking. For the electricity and heat sector, bioenergy is one of the most economic options, ensuring a reliable supply at any time of the day, regardless of weather conditions.

On the other hand, concern about the sustainability of feedstock production for bioenergy has recently dampened some of the expectations about its future contribution to the renewable energy supply. Governments maintain strong support for bioenergy, but have also stepped in to legally ensure a minimum level of sustainability, particularly in Europe.

At Ecofys our message is that bioenergy will play a key role within a future sustainable energy system, but rigorous measures are needed to ensure that it makes a significant contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and sustainable development.

We are a reliable partner for all bioenergy-related activities, with many years of extensive experience – based on being involved at all levels, from high-level policy advice to the realisation of bioenergy projects.
